Next, you will find a long article regarding the restoration of a statue nicknamed «Fame» initially created by Pierre Feitu. That sculpture is an element of the monument raised in Joyce Kilmer Park in the New York borough of Bronx in memory of Louis J. Heintz. That article composed by journalist John Freeman Gill was published in the New York Times on the 22nd of January 2021.

If you want to know even more about Louis J. Heintz Memorial in Joyce Kilmer Park, please read the following article in the official website of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. (Copyright: The City of New York©)

As noted in Gallery 2, the monument erected in honor of Louis J. Heintz holds a special place in the hearts of New Yorkers. It is therefore an important part of their landscape and the challenges it has faced since its creation resonate deeply with them. In particular, media professionals and other heritage enthusiasts—journalists, cultural guides, and so on—are sensitive to the vicissitudes that have befallen (or befell in the past) this memorial. Their interest, concern, and enthusiasm are reflected in a wealth of documents, articles, and photographs recounting these events. You will find some representative examples below.

First, here is an article by David Herszenson, a guide to the Bronx, illustrated with his own photos.

Tuesday night our exploration of The Bronx took us to Joyce Kilmer Park to learn about Fame.
She actually wouldn’t be memorable to you unless you lived in the area prior to the 80s.
Do you recognize the statue of Bronx Civic Leader LouisHeinz? Well, Fame was the allegorical female figure that once stood below him. In the 70s she fell victim to vandalism and was removed and placed in storage. Vandals beef with her must’ve run deep because they found the storage unit she was in and roughed her up some more, breaking off her head, arms and feet!
The Heintz Memorial was dedicated in 1909 and was created by French sculptor PierreFeitu. “Fame” once held a palm in one hand that was removed in 1935 after it came loose and her other hand reached up and appeared to be writing the words inscribed on the monument, “To Commemorate the founding of the progress and prosperity of the Bronx.”
The NYC Parks Dept wanted to restore Fame but they had a few problems:
1. She was headless
2. Her face had never been photographed
3. She was armless
4. She had no feet
Parks Department conservator-sculptor John Saunders had to create a new face for “Fame.” And he did so by consulting other works of the original sculptor Pierre Feitu and his contemporaries.
Restoration work on “Fame” began in 2014 then they sculpted replicas of her missing features. They actually casted his interns arms to make Fame’s new arms.
December of last year she was restored and put back in her home over 4 decades later.

Yet another splendid document thanks to which you can catch another glimpse of the very same monument showing Fame and the rest of the sculpture (from roughly 2:45 onwards) and also its beautiful Joyce Kilmer Park surroundings. Many thanks to the Bronx Naturalist for this lovely video and his very interesting historical and cultural commentary.
